Tyser Tower/Byrd Stadium Improvements

February 2008

As luck would have it I decided to take some shots of Tyser today when 2 men with hard hats approached. They are part of the lead team for the building project at Tyser. Mike Grinnell, Project Superintendent, and Abe Vogel, Project Engineer, from Clark Construction took me on a tour inlcuding a trip to the top of Tyser where some of these shots were taken. They will be updating me on this and I will add to this so you will be aware of waht's happening with the project. Right now most of the work is getting the ground support ready for the tower. I also saw the beams for the new scoreboard go up as well. Very exciting!!!

First hand report from Mike Grinnell, Project Superintendent:

On the west side of the stadium we are well underway installing Auger Cast Piles. These grout filled piles extend into the earth 60’ and support the structure above. There are over 200 on the project. After the Piles are complete we will begin the concrete below grade structure that will anchor all of the piles together.
On the east side of the stadium we are completing work to the infrastructure. In the pictures you can see us tying in the last of the sanitary sewer manholes to the existing line. This connection was made 16’ underground. Soon we will be working along Stadium Drive on the site utilities, which will include tying in a new water line and a new sanitary sewer line.
In the month to come the most noticeable difference will be the erection of our tower crane. The base of it is being completed now on Stadium Drive. It will sit on 8 auger cast piles that are tied together with a 25’ x 25’concrete cap that is six foot tall. This will be the first tower crane on the University’s campus and will nearly be 300’ tall. Once in place the above ground concrete structure will start to go up.
